Artwork & Variety

There are a lot of things that have been on my artistic mind lately, and

One night when scouring through Tumblr and Lost at E Minor, I found a neat method of sculpting that included records and heat. Hot-vinyl molding? You bet'cha!

I don't quite remember why I was drawing whales all over my sketchbook this afternoon in art, but I found that the more I drew them, the more I

This has taken me so long to finish. I sewed the two pieces together with an embroidery needle and blue yarn,

"Emancipation of Toletrane"
Water-acrylic and gesso newspaper.
"The Emancipation of Toletrane", by Mikayla Garvey

The shading and matte and gesso processing for this piece took a long time to manipulate the paint, but in the end it all turned out the way I had intended. The watered down acrylic supports and clings to the newspaper regardless of it's glossy texture after having been added to adhesive gesso to allow for heavy texturing. The hues of the blue and orange washes are constant and allow emphasis to the woman's face. Shading with contrasting colors is always easiest to do when working with heavy reds because the contrast is a lime/mellow green which, when mixed with the red, makes a purple hint that is then off-set by the white and subtle pinks in contrast to the ink on the newspaper behind.
After working extremely hard layer after layer and adjusting the proportions for the eyes and chin placement, there are very few things that I have found to be 100% successful, and this is definitely one of those rare pieces that lights up my day and helps me to better grasp that art is not just a hobby--it's a chosen lifestyle that I now share with all those in the IB Studio Art family under the supervision of the loving, caring Mrs. Williams and Mr. Patterson.

The mantra of an artist, taken from the derived translation of Degas' autobiography:

:There are so many things in this life that are meant to be truly beautiful, but they donnot become beautiful unless we look upon them with our own imagination and creation. What is appealing to our eyes is often times pleasing to our hearts and our soul; a purest kind of admiration for something treasured. People, places, and things are commonly the subjects of what we perceive to be gorgeous. With connection to the world at our fingertips, we have more access to knowledge and diversity than ever before. Which ultimately lets us explore wonders thousands of miles from our doorstep.
My question to the teenage readers would be, what do you consider to be uniquely beautiful?

Well, here we are in the new year and it has taken me some time to update in a very long time. I'm thinking that this is going to be a great year though. I have just started the IB program, which includes art. What better way to get feedback than opening it up for criticism?

"Art is something that inspires us from within, not the other way around. It's a sense that we lack or are blessed with. I will not pretend that I donnot possess art, for I feel it in my bones and in my blood."
 -Michaelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni

"Parakeet"
I had attempted birds before, but they never turned out quite the same and I did not reach the quality results I had hoped for. Using Derwent graphic pencils and charcoals for shading, and erasers for light values. This is my first practice-run at animals in a 2-D forward front. I hope to continue drawing birds, and will be producing more sketches to accompany my "Parakeet" soon!

"Arizona Jasmine Blossoms"
As for my "Arizona Jasmine Blossoms", the inspiration came right off the side of the Arizona Green Tea aluminum can that I was drinking on our way from So. Lake Tahoe, California to San Francisco. It was approx. a 4hr. drive, and within that timeframe, after steadiness and some car sickness, this piece was produced. Using the same Derwent pencils and more generous usage of the charcoal, the shading on the flowers is also one of my first attempts at appreciation of the differentiation between dark and light colors in shadows.
We have many flower gardens in our area, especially El Rancho San Rafael, an arboretum and botanical garden that I plan to spend many hours in before the seasons begin changing back to fall and winter. But, even when the cold weather arrives, the sketches will be fewer and the watercolors and paintings of the brilliant snow will appear. Keep checking back for more art updates!
